In order for more people around the world to learn more about cryptocurrency and blockchain, it has to become more of a presence in our daily lives. One of the ways that this is possible is by making sure that blockchain is utilized more than ever.
Malta is nicknamed ‘The Blockchain Island” for a reason – the government has been very open about embracing blockchain and cryptocurrency. The prime minister even stated that crypto is the “future of money” to the United Nations General Assembly. Yesterday, the prime minister announced that the country will be the first nation to make sure that its education certificates and credentials are on the blockchain.
About The Announcement
The Maltese government is hoping to make sure that all educational certificates are on the blockchain within two years. The prime minister of Malta, Joseph Muscat, tweeted about the announcement yesterday, on February 21, 2019. You can find the tweet below:

This will happen thanks to a partnership between the Malta government and The Learning Machine, a blockchain startup that has been working on this project (in a pilot capacity) since September 2017. The pilot project initially went by “Blockcerts”. For those wondering which credentials are included, the answer is that even secondary school certificates, churches, and independent schools will be making sure that the blockchain records the credentials.
History Made
This marks the first time in history where an entire country will put all of their educational certificates on the blockchain. Muscat pointed out in a speech that this will help students with regards to data privacy, as well as reduce bureaucratic inefficiency in the sector.
Muscat referenced Malta’s nickname, as well, stating: “In 2017, we said Malta will become the blockchain island, and it has.”
